Pseudoplatystoma Fasciata

Pseudoplatystoma Fasciata

Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum or Barred Sorubim is a species of long-whiskered catfish native to the Corantijn, Essequibo, Orinoco, ParanĂ¡ and Amazon Basins. The nocturnal predator feeds mainly on other fish and crabs. Females reach a more notable size. They become sexually mature at 56 centimetres (22 in), males at 45 centimetres (18 in) and this species reaches a maximum length of 104 centimetres (41 in) TL. Fecundity is estimated at 8 million eggs per kg.They are found in freshwater environments, though most inhabit shallow, running water. Representatives of at least eight families are hypogean (live underground) with three families that are also troglobitic (inhabiting caves). One such species is Phreatobius cisternarum, known to live underground in phreatic habitats. Numerous species from the families Ariidae and Plotosidae, and a few species from among the Aspredinidae and Bagridae, are found in salt water.
